Mice are one of the most common pests in the world and are found just about everywhere. They’re rodents, and they can be very destructive when they infest your property. Prodigious breeders, a couple of mice can quickly become dozens of them, all scurrying behind the fridge, walls, around the baseboards and into the furniture. They chew their way through fabric and get into cupboards and drawers to find food. In short, they are a nuisance.

If you have a rodent problem, you will want to employ trapping methods to rid your home of these pests or call a qualified exterminator.  However, use these cleaning tips for help in repelling them and preventing the problem in the first place!

1 – Moth balls:  Mice are repelled by their smell.  Leave open containers in areas such as under the sink to repel the mice.  Moth balls are toxic however, so if you have small children or pets that might find them, you will want to avoid this method!

2 – Ammonia: Mice are repelled by ammonia smells because it mimics the smell of a predator’s urine. Place open jars with ammonia in cupboards, behind appliance or in areas they may enter. This method could be problematic also however as there is the potential of the jars being spilled accessed by pets or children.

3 – Fabric softener sheets are a safer way to repel these pests.  Line drawers or cabinets, press into cracks in the walls or put at the bottom of trash cans where mice may be attracted.

4 – Peppermint oil: This is another safe way to deter mice. Put at least 5 drops of the essential oil on cotton balls and place around the home, in closets, under cabinets or wherever the rodents are likely to enter the home.
